Week Six

Glued Kerning

The “Glued Kerning” project aims to immerse students in the art of visual kerning by providing them with cut-out letters to arrange and glue in their sketchbooks. This hands-on exercise enhances students’ understanding of letter spacing and fosters an appreciation for the visual harmony achieved through kerning.

Directions

Letter Selection
    1. 1. Students will be provided with multiple sets of cut-out letters and a given phrase that they will spell out in their sketchbooks.
    2. 2. Consider the inherent spacing between letters.
Arranging and Gluing
    1. 1. Arrange the cut-out letters in the sketchbooks to spell out the given phrase.
    2. 2. Visual assessment and manual adjustment of letter spacing to achieve optimal kerning is a very important skill as a designer.
Comparative Analysis
    1. 1. After arranging the letters, students can compare their glued kerning with the default spacing of the letters to observe the impact of their adjustments.
Reflection
    1. 1. Ask students to reflect on their kerning choices, discussing the challenges faced and the strategies employed to achieve balanced spacing.
    2. 2. Encourage them to consider how their decisions impact the overall visual appeal of the phrase.

Assessment

Assessment will focus on the effectiveness of visual kerning in the arrangement of letters, the ability to achieve balanced spacing, and the depth of reflection on the kerning process.
