Ransom Note

The “Ransom Note” project encourages students to experiment with typography and design by creating a ransom note using cut-out letters from magazines. This creative and unconventional activity allows students to explore letterforms, layout, and composition in a playful manner.

Directions

Materials Collection
  1. 1. Use the magazines in the back of the classroom.
  2. 2. You will need your own scissors, and glue.
  3. 3. Use the magazines to cut out letters needed to compose a ransom note.
Message Conceptualization
  1. 1. Brainstorm and conceptualize the message they want to convey in the ransom note.
  2. 2. The content should be class-appropriate and can range from humor to personal expression.
Letter Selection and Arrangement
  1. 1. Select and arrange the cut-out letters on a piece of paper to form their ransom note.
  2. 2. Experiment with different layouts and arrangements.
Gluing and Finalization
  1. 1. Once satisfied with their arrangements, glue the cut-out letters onto the paper to finalize the ransom note designs.
Reflection and Presentation
  1. Reflect on the creative process, consider the challenges and decisions made during the project. 

Assessment

Assessment will focus on the creativity, coherence, and visual impact of the ransom notes. Consider the effectiveness of letter selection, arrangement, and overall design composition. The assessment should also take into account class-appropriate content.
