Fonts Have Feelings

The “Fonts Have Feelings” project aims to demonstrate to students how typefaces evoke emotions, similar to how photographs do. Through interactive engagement with different sayings in various typefaces, students will explore the emotional nuances of typography.

Directions

Post-It Note Reflection
  1. 1. Bring Post-it notes to class.
  2. 2. There will be multiple posters around the room, each displaying a saying in a different typeface.
  3. 3. Write how each saying and typeface make you feel on your post-it note.
  4. 4. Place it on the poster.
Group Discussion
  1. 1. Share reflections on the emotional impact of various sayings and typefaces. 
Saying Selection
  1. 1. Choose one saying that particularly resonated with you during the activity. 
Typeface Exploration
  1. 1. Selecting the most appropriate typeface for your chosen saying.
  2. 2. Discuss the visual characteristics that align with the intended emotional tone.
Layout Design
  1. 1. Lay out their chosen saying in the selected typeface.
  2. 2. Consider aspects such as font size, spacing, and alignment.
  3. 3. Experiment with layout design to enhance visual appeal.
Printing and Mounting
  1. 1. Once satisfied with the layout, students will print the saying in the chosen typeface.
  2. 2. Mount the printed piece in your sewn sketchbooks.
Reflection and Presentation
  1. 1. Share your design choices, the emotional impact of the selected typeface, and your experience throughout the project.

Assessment

Assessment will focus on the depth of student reflections, the appropriateness of typeface selection, the creativity and effectiveness of layout design, and the overall execution of the printed and mounted piece.

Deliverables

  • • You will submit a photograph of your monogram letters.
    • • Take the photo at 1:1 and add some creativity to it.
    • • Think about how the photograph is styled.
    • • Think about what’s in the background.
    • • Are you holding it, or is it a flat lay?
  • • Name your files: LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME-ASSIGNMENT.JPG
  • • Submit your photos in the assigned folder.
