Drawing Faces
The “Drawing Faces” project challenges students to deepen their understanding of a chosen typeface by redrawing a provided phrase without tracing. This exercise encourages students to notice and appreciate the subtle nuances in letterforms, aiding in both legibility and stylistic choices.
Directions
Typeface Selection

- 1. Each student selects a typeface for the project.
- 2. You will be provided a printout of a phrase in the chosen typeface for reference.
Redrawing Exercise
- 1. Redraw the provided phrase without tracing.
- 2. Add guide lines indicating the baseline, x-height, and cap height for better understanding of type anatomy.
Observations Journal
- 1. Throughout the week, keep observations notes
- Document at least five interesting nuances you discover about the chosen typeface during the redrawing exercise.
Preparation for Presentation
- Select the most compelling nuances for your presentation.
- 2. Remember to present with clear and concise communication.
Class Discussion
- 1. We will have a class discussion allowing for questions and sharing of additional insights or observations.
Deliverables
- • You will submit a photograph of your monogram letters.
- • Take the photo at 1:1 and add some creativity to it.
- • Think about how the photograph is styled.
- • Think about what’s in the background.
- • Are you holding it, or is it a flat lay?
- • Name your files: LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME-ASSIGNMENT.JPG
- • Submit your photos in the assigned folder.
