Senior Gifts Reflecting Years of Growth
Senior Gifts Reflecting Years of Growth
As another semester ends, it’s a bittersweet moment for any college professor. Watching students journey through four transformative years is nothing short of remarkable. From stumbling freshmen to confident seniors, each stage brings challenges and triumphs.
The College Experience
Freshman year is like the awkward toddler phase. They’re learning the ropes of college life, from living independently to tackling laundry duty.
Sophomore year sees them settling in, no longer burning down the dorms but facing tougher academic challenges. It’s a transition to adulthood with professors demanding more critical thinking.
Junior year offers a breather, a time to explore and take risks while still mindful of maintaining that GPA.
And then, there’s senior year. With the finish line in sight, some students dive headfirst into building their portfolios, while others battle the onset of senioritis. Yet, amidst the varied responses, one thing remains constant – the desire to succeed beyond graduation.
Senior Gifts
That’s where senior gifts come in. As a college professor in the College of Arts and Media at GCU, I believe it’s crucial to celebrate student success and engagement. Despite the constraints of a teacher’s budget, I strive to get creative with gifts that reflect our shared journey throughout the semester.
Spring 2023
In Spring 2023, my students participated in a Daily Starter exercise where they folded a piece of paper into thirds. The first person drew a head on the top third, the second person, without seeing the head, drew the torso on the middle third, and the third person, without seeing the head or torso, drew the legs on the bottom third. This project was really fun, and I spent the next few months digitally drawing and coloring all the monsters. With the assistance of a talented student, we brought these creations to life. Each student received a sticker pack featuring the three monsters they worked on.
Fall 2023
The following semester, Fall 2023, saw a shift towards hands-on learning. Armed with a tiny laser cutter, students pitched for equipment to enhance their design capabilities. To mark their achievements, each senior received a personalized wooden ornament commemorating their graduation year.
Spring 2024
Fast forward to Spring 2024, where I had the privilege of teaching students I’ve known since their freshman year. With their love for creativity and food in mind, I collaborated with a local baker to craft custom cookies using 3D-printed cookie cutters. Paired with hand-calligraphed paper boxes filled with sweets, these gifts served as a token of appreciation for their dedication and talent.
As these seniors embark on their next chapter, I’ll miss their presence but eagerly anticipate the impact they’ll make in the world. Each gift, a testament to their growth and the unforgettable moments shared in the classroom.
