Pickle Label
The “Typographic Pickle Jar Label” project challenges students to apply their typographic skills in designing visually appealing labels for pickle jars. Each student will create eight unique label designs, focusing on the front of the labels without illustrating the jar. The emphasis will be on typography, color, and creative expression.
Directions
Inspiration Gathering
- 1. Gather inspiration from existing pickle jar labels or typography designs.
- 2. Discuss the elements that make a label effective and memorable.
Conceptualization and Sketching
- 1. Brainstorm ideas and sketch rough drafts for their pickle jar labels.
- 2. Remember to consider typography hierarchy and layout.
Font Selection
- 1. You are encouraged to experiment with font styles that convey the desired tone for the product.
Color Palette Development
- 1. Develop a cohesive color palette for the labels.
- 2. Discuss the psychological impact of colors and the relevance to the product.
Design Implementation
- 1. Implement the chosen typography, layout, and color palette in creating the front designs of the pickle jar labels.
- 2. Focus on legibility and visual hierarchy.
Reflection
- 1. Each student should reflect on the design choices made, explaining how their labels effectively convey the product information.
Assessment
Assessment will focus on the creativity, consistency, and effectiveness of the typographic designs across the set of eight labels. Consider the clarity of communication, use of color, and overall aesthetic appeal.
Extension Activity (Optional)
- 1. Create a mock-up or digital representation of your pickle jar labels on a 3D jar template.
- 2. This can provide a more realistic presentation of the designs in a product context.
Deliverables
- • You will submit a photograph of your monogram letters.
- • Take the photo at 1:1 and add some creativity to it.
- • Think about how the photograph is styled.
- • Think about what’s in the background.
- • Are you holding it, or is it a flat lay?
- • Name your files: LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME-ASSIGNMENT.JPG
- • Submit your photos in the assigned folder.
