Week Four

Ligature/Gadzook Initials

The “Ligatures and Gadzooks” project encourages students to delve into the world of typography by exploring inventive ways to connect two randomly chosen letters using ligatures or gadzooks. This project not only enhances students’ understanding of typographic elements but also fosters creativity and design thinking.

Directions

Letter Selection
  1. 1. Students will be assigned two letters from the alphabet. This randomness adds an element of unpredictability to the design process.
Research and Inspiration
  1. 1. Before diving into design, students will explore existing ligatures and gadzooks for inspiration.
Design Exploration (Part 1)
  1. 1. Students will create a minimum of four initial designs, experimenting with ligatures and gadzooks to visually connect their chosen letters.
  2. 2. Emphasis should be placed on diversity and creativity in the designs.
Peer Feedback
  1. 1. Students will share their initial designs with peers for constructive feedback.
  2. 2. Peer feedback will be written on the page in the sketchbook.
Design Exploration (Part 2)
  1. 1. Based on feedback, students will refine their designs and create an additional set of at least four variations.
Reflection
  1. 1. Students will explain the concepts behind their ligatures and gadzooks.

Assessment

Assessment will focus on the creativity, originality, and effectiveness of the ligature and gadzook designs, as well as the ability to articulate the conceptual thinking behind each design during the presentation.
