Week Two

Letter Anatomy

The “Letter Anatomy” project serves as a foundational exploration of the structural elements that compose letters. Students will draw their initials, identifying and analyzing the various parts of letter anatomy.

Directions

Choose a typeface from the list below. You will use it for both your capital and lowercase letters in your sketchbook. Remember to give yourself margins large enough so your letters can breathe.

Capital Letter
  1. 1. The capital letter goes on the left side page.
  2. 2. Use the typeface you chose and draw your first initial.
  3. 3. The letter should be proportionate to the page.
  4. 4. Keep in mind your margins as you begin to draw.
  5. 5. It is up to you whether to color it in or not.
  6. 6. Identify all the pieces of anatomy on the capital letter.
  7. 7. Keep your drawings neat and tidy.
Lowercase Letter
  1. 1. The lowercase letter goes on the right side page
  2. 2. Use the typeface you chose and draw your last initial.

Assessment

Assessment will focus on the accuracy of identifying and labeling letter anatomy, the quality of drawn initials, and the demonstration of foundational knowledge that can be built upon in subsequent projects.
