Week Eight
Serif v. Sans Serif
The “Serif v. Sans Serif” project challenges students to visually compare and contrast serif and sans-serif fonts by showcasing six different examples of each. Students will draw the letter combination “Ag” in each font, effectively demonstrating the unique characteristics of serif and sans-serif typefaces.
Directions
Font Selection
- 1. Choose six different serif fonts and six different sans-serif fonts.
- 2. Be diverse in the selections, consider factors such as style, weight, and historical context.
Labeling
- 1. Label each selected font with its actual name.
Grid Layout in Sketchbook
- 1. Use the grid layout in the middle of your sketchbook/
- 2. The left side is designated for serif fonts and the right side for sans-serif.
Drawing “Ag”
- In each grid cell, students will draw the letter combination “Ag” using the designated font.
- 2. It is important to accurately represent the unique features of each typeface.
Comparative Analysis
- 1. After completing the drawings, conduct a comparative analysis.
- 2. This is done through written reflections, focusing on the differences observed in serifs and sans serifs.
Assessment
Assessment will focus on the accuracy of font identification, the quality of drawings representing each font, and the depth of comparative analysis in recognizing distinctions between serif and sans-serif typefaces.
Deliverables
- • You will submit a photograph of your monogram letters.
- • Take the photo at 1:1 and add some creativity to it.
- • Think about how the photograph is styled.
- • Think about what’s in the background.
- • Are you holding it, or is it a flat lay?
- • Name your files: LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME-ASSIGNMENT.JPG
- • Submit your photos in the assigned folder.
